December 16 - December meeting held 

The Winnipeg Robert Burns Club today met for the last time in 2006.  Following a roast beef lunch, President Jim Carrigan reviewed arrangements for the 100th Burns Supper on January 25, 2007, and the forthcoming World Federation Conference.

Following the meeting, draws were held for 2 door prizes.  Mr Ian Thomson won a Burns Federation pen.  Mrs Mima Kirk, attending her first luncheon, won a Christmas package.

As well as the usual Burns readings, Craig Oliphant led the assemblage in a Christmas Carol sing-a-long.

December 8 - Burns Supper Venue Confirmed 

The Winnipeg Robert Burns Club today confirmed that the  upcoming One Hundredth Annual "Burns Supper" will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2007, at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

Cocktails will be served at 6:00 p.m. prompt, and we ask that all are in their seats by 6:55 p.m. The Head Table will be piped in at 7:00 p.m., with a 3-course Dinner, as well as the traditional "Haggis and Neeps" will follow.

The evening’s entertainment programme will include songs of Burns and Scotland, and Highland Dancing. The singers, who include Paula Mc Leod and P.J. Buchan, will be under the direction of Richard Greig.

The dancers will be under the expert guidance of Susanne Robertson.

The Immortal Memory on this most memorable of Burns Suppers will be delivered by The Hon Bill Blaikie, PC, MP, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.

Bill’s "Memories" are lively, entertaining and thought provoking.

November 29, 2006 - Conference Venue Confirmed 

The Winnipeg Robert Burns Club confirmed today that the 2007 Conference of the Robert Burns World Federation will be held at the Fairmont Hotel August 3-5.  The conference committee are very pleased to have secured the finest hotel in the city for this international gathering of Burnsians.

 November 18, 2006  - Details of Burns Supper Announced

Jim Carrigan, President of the Winnipeg Robert Burns Club announced today, at the club's monthly luncheon meeting that the 2007 Burns Supper, will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on Thursday January 25th.  Club Member, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons Hon. Bill  Blaikie will propose the Toast to Immortal Memory.  The January event will be the 100th Burns Supper held by the Winnipeg Club.

November 6, 2006 - Burns Federation dinner venue set

The Winnipeg Robert Burns Club confirmed today that the Robert Burns World Federation Ltd. 2007 Presidential Investiture Dinner & Dance will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on Saturday August 4 as part of the 2007 Federation Conference and AGM.

The dinner, at which the chain of office will be transfered from Angus Middleton to the incoming President, is open to all.  Information on ticket prices will be available in the coming months.

 October 16, 2006 - Winnipeg Robert Burns Club sets venue for 2006-2007 luncheons

The Winnipeg Robert Burns Club Executive today confirmed that the luncheon meetings for the 2006-2007 will once again be held at the McPhillips Street Station Casino.

September 10, 2006 - World Federation Conference Ends in Renfrew, Scotland

The Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Robert Burns World Federation closed today in Renfrew, Scotland. Representatives from many of the over 300 Burns clubs around the globe, as well as a number of individual and family members gathered at the Normandy Hotel for the annual event which began with a Friday night dinner and Ceilidh.

Following breakfast on Saturday, the Annual General Meeting was held. Outgoing President John Paterson chaired the meeting which confirmed Angus Middleton as the new President and John Haining as the incoming Senior Vice President. Literature Convenor Bill Dawson was elected as Junior Vice President. As noted earlier, it was confirmed that Winnipeg will host the 2007 conference. As well it was announced that the 2009 conference, during the 'Scottish Year of Homecoming', marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, will be held in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh.  

Saturday evening concluded with the formal dinner and dance, where outgoing President Major (rtd) John Paterson transferred the chain of office to Angus Middleton, who then inducted John Haining as his successor as Senior Vive-President. John Haining, in turn, presented Bill Dawson, elected that morning with his badge of office as Junior Vice President

The conference ended Sunday morning with the annual church service

The Winnipeg Club, hosts of next year’s Conference was represented by Past President Colin Harris.

September 9, 2006 - World Federation Confirms Winnipeg will host 2007 Conference 

At the Annual General Meeting of the Robert Burns World Federation held this afternoon the Normandy Hotel in Renfrew, Scotland, Conference Convenor Harry McGuffog, on behalf of the Board, confirmed that the 2007 Conference will be held in Winnipeg.  Mr McGuffog reviewed the details of the conference, which had earlier been sent to all Federation members. The conference will be held the over the weekend of August 3-5.

September 8, 2006 - World Federation Conference Opens in Renfrew, Scotland

August 13, 2006 - Second Week of Folklorama begins - Pavilion of Scotland opens

With the start of the second week of Folklorama, the Pavilion of Scotland opened this evening.  As it has been for many years, the Winnipeg Robert Burns Club is once again a part of the Pavilion.  Pictures and books belonging to the club along with plates, statues and other memorabilia which are part of a member's private collection  are on display at the club booth.  The club will be accepting membership applications, and renewals, throughout the week, at the booth, and remind all that the membership fee for 2006-2007, the club's 100th year is $7.00.

As well, Club President Jim Carrigan is serving this year as male, Adult Ambassador for the Pavilion.  Ambassador Carrigan visited all 21 Week One Pavilions but will be on hand throughout out the week to welcome visitors.

July 23, 2006 - Club Commemorates 210th Anniversary of Bard's Death

Under the hot afternoon sun, members of the Winnipeg Robert Burns Club gathered at the Burns Statue, on the Kennedy Street side of the Legislative Grounds, for the annual Memorial Service, this year marking the 21oth anniversary of the Bard’s death.

Following a welcome from Club President Jim Carrigan, Chaplain Sebastian Sears read a self-penned eulogy. Club Piper Kirby McRae played a lament, following which Jim Carrigan laid a bundle of flowers at the foot of the statue.

Entertainment followed, which included members of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, singer P. J. Buchan, and members of the club with recitations.

The afternoon ended with the traditional joining of hands in a circle around the statue and the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

The club thanks all those who came out to join us.

July 2 - RBANA Annual Meeting ends in Halifax 

The Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Robert Burns Association of North America ended today in Halifax.  Burnsians from across North America, and visitors from the United Kingdom enjoyed a weekend gathering in Canada's Ocean Playground.  The conference began Friday evening with a reception and Ceilidh overlooking Halifax Harbour The host club's famed "Awfiest Choir" began the festivities, which included recitations, songs, and lots of humour.  Winnipeg Burns Club President Jim Carrigan recited "Address to a Haggis"  and Vice President Tony Grogan gave a fascinating, and slightly humourous historical account of the battle that inspired Burns to write Scot's Wha Ha'.  The evening ended with a group of Scottish Country dancers giving a demonstration, before leading delegates onto the floor.

Following breakfast on Saturday, the Annual General Meeting was held.  Jim Carrigan was acclaimed as the new RBANA President with Club Past President Colin Harris as Secretary/Treasurer.  Dr Tony Grogan was elected as one of three Canadian Directors.  Following the AGM several delegates viewed the Canada Day parade below the Halifax Citadel, and also watched a classic World Cup soccer match from Germany.

The afternoon saw outgoing US Director Leslie Strachan win the third annual Dr Jim Connor Memorial Quiz trophy.  It was his first win after being runner-up the first two years.

Saturday evening concluded with the formal dinner and dance, where outgoing President Joan Turner presented Jim Carrigan with his badge of office.  With Canada Day fireworks viewed from the Harbour, and the Chebucto Big Band entertaining, the delegates were memorably entertained.

The conference ended Sunday morning with the annual church service followed by a pilgrimage to the Halifax Burns Statue.

Following the conclusion of the conference many delegates remained to enjoy the Nova Scotia International Tattoo.

April 22 - Burns Club holds Annual Meeting

The Winnipeg Robert Burns Club ended its season of Luncheon Meetings with their 99th Annual General Meeting.  The club also honoured past member Agnes Comack who passed away last Sunday.  Members will be attending the funeral on Thursday.

Looking forward, President Jim Carrigan updated members on preparations for the 2007 RBANA annual General Meeting, reminded members of the Memorial Service on July 23 and asked for volunteers to assist at the club booth at the Scottish Pavilion during Folklorama.

It was indicated that the need for volunteers is especially critical this year as two of our regular volunteers will be unavailable.  Club Treasurer Craig Oliphant is undertaking a cross country bicycling event, and Club President Jim Carrigan has been named as the Ambassador for the 2006 Scottish Pavilion.

The club will resume its regular luncheon meetings in October.

March 18 - Burns Club nominates 3 for RBANA Board

At their regular monthly meeting this afternoon, members of the Winnipeg Robert Burns Club elected to nominate three members for the board of the Robert Burns Association of North America (RBANA).

Club President Jim Carrigan, currently RBANA Vice-President was nominated as President, Past President Colin Harris, currently a Canadian Director, was nominated as Secretary/Treasurer and 2nd Vice President Dr Tony Grogan was nominated as Canadian Director

The election, for a two year term, will take place on Saturday July 1st, at the RBANA Annual Meeting in Halifax Nova Scotia. 

February 17 - Redesigned Web Site Launched

Following some design changes, the Winnipeg Robert Burns Club relaunched its website this morning. Among the changes are a new photo gallery, with pictures from last months Burns Supper, as well as redesigned Features and Links sections.
